Cottier was born in Missouri, and held degrees from Alabama Polytechnic Institute and the University of Missouri. A member of the Auburn faculty from 1930-1977, he was Professor of Poultry Science and Professor of Pathology. East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
